A bizarre circus of typical Dutch and absolutely-not Dutch
In this collection of statues you immediately feel that something is wrong, but what is it ...? You feel recognition but also difference; on a awkward and humorous way Guillaume Bijl confronts us with ourselves and what we are not.
A man on stilts with a old-Dutch girl on his shoulders while they laugh from ear to ear. A man in costume with stretched arms while a woman with long skirt hovers just below his hands. A huge pop with a head like a cauliflower topped with a crown, with a small man in a shirt with rolled up sleeves. What does this all mean? Does this have anything to do with The Netherlands or Amsterdam?
The images are realistic (except the giants) and are dressed in traditional clothing; women with long skirts, men in dark suits. The statues are standing in front of a center for exhibitions, congresses and exhibitions that is located in a characterless transitional area with houses, squares and highways. In my view, this is about the 'act normally' and 'the costs go before the revenues' of our Dutch culture. So far so good, but still there is something wrong ...
The doubt begins with the way everyone is laughing; this is so wide that it hurts a bit. The women are relaxed while standing on the shoulders as if it does not take any effort. The primary colors don't fit with the realistic statues. The hilarity is complete at the turquoise of the eye shadow and pink cheeks of the female giant; this is completely out of tune. Here Guillaume Bijl makes clear with his Beeldenreeks that cheerfulness, absurdity and magic can enrich our Dutch culture.

So far so good, maar toch klopt er iets niet...

Guillaume Bijl: "I want to create a frivolous atmosphere with these images. This brightly colored sculptures to place on a pedestal, a monumental picture. This is necessary in contrast to the industrial background image of the strongly delineated RAI and environment."
The images of the Festive Images range complement the scale of the Plaza Europa, and their bright colors contrast with the business buildings. A giant and giantess, an illusionist who a lady let float and a Dutch milkmaid on the shoulders of a wader. These are the characters who Guillaume Bijl has chosen for his series. All figures are taken from the population and street theatre. The Giants walked away from a parade – the men who let propel are pride for dolls. With the ' Festive Images series ' gives Guillaume Bijl his vision of Amsterdam RAI and festive place for exhibitors and fair visitors.
