In the design for the new westerpark by Kathryn Gustafson was at the end of the central axis an artwork situated. For this location was to Herman Makkink, which command a smoking rather rare for work in public space.
Herman Makkink (1937) says about his work: ' the image relates to the human condition. We are half animal half human and to our great surprise we come, unsolicited, to life on this earth in an almost impossible position. Only by our view of the infinite to focus we can transcend to this dire situation... '
the two bronze figures in his image have four legs. The hemisphere is the Earth and they are on a slippery slope, a ' almost impossible position '. And their gaze to the infinite does indeed seem to have been targeted.
masonry plays a large role in the work of M. In brick let him make domes, cylinders or spheres. He fits it through craft masonry methods, too-for example in the westerpark-in a manner not des Masons is: the overkragende cement is not left zones, nor is the stone attached.
to the Lelylaan (Borough of Osdorp) is a small brick cottage. On the Spinozahof (Centre) he placed the sculpture ' Old ground ', a tube shape of white concrete stone and red brick. (This last work was demolished in 1994 because it limited their views according to local residents.)

masonry plays an important role in the work of Herman M. The material returns again and again, in the form of spheres, cylinders and domes. To the Lelylaan is a small brick cottage and on the Ground at the time the sculpture was ' old Spinozahof ', a tube form of white concrete stone and red brick. It is demolished in 1994 because it limited the view according to local residents. The butterfly mill in slotervaart (1998) exists for a sloping part masonry and masonry hemisphere comes back in this picture in the westerpark.
the use of masonry has its origins in Makkinks interest in remains of ancient cultures. His visual language often refers to ruins, whose strange, not directly to post forms strongly contrast with the immediate vicinity.
M about his work that represents the globe on which people sit on a slippery slope:"the image relates to the human condition. We are half animal half human and to our great surprise we come, unsolicited, to life on this earth in an almost impossible position. Only by our view of the infinite to focus to this dire situation ' That we can transcend the man half animal, is imagined by the four feet that the staring human figures have.
