De naamgeving Tabula rasa wordt vermeld in ‘Beelden in de berm’ 2003; het stadsdeel Noord heeft ‘gebroken tafel’ in de boeken staan. Tabula rasa komt uit het Latijn en betekent ‘onbeschreven blad’. Als een kind ter wereld komt is zijn geest leeg als een onbeschreven blad, klaar voor nieuwe ideeën en kennis; door leer- en ervaringsprocessen ontwikkelt de geest en daarmee het kind was ooit de gedachte. Voorheen stond het beeld voor het stadsdeelkantoor waar aangifte gedaan werd van pasgeborenen.
Het kunstwerk stond op het Buikslotermeerplein, voor het voormalig stadsdeelkantoor. Maar december 2006 staat het beeld omheind in een bouwput., het winkelcentrum wordt op de schop genomen, oude panden als het voormalig stadsdeelkantoor worden afgebroken, nieuwe winkelpanden gebouwd. Later is het kunstwerk weggehaald en na een uitgebreide schoonmaakbeurt in 2007 herplaatst in de groenzône Klaprozenweg / Gutserstraat. Het werk markeert de toegang tot Tuindorp Oostzaan vanaf de Klaprozenweg.

Een Tabula Rasa is een latijnse uitdrukking. Vrij vertaald betekent het: met een schone lei beginnen. Het object is tien meter lang en heeft staanders van beton, waarop een gebroken tafelblad van cortenstaal rust. Het beeld roept op tot beschouwlijkheid en relativeren, zegt de kunstenaar erover. Het kunstwerk werd in 1982 geplaats op het Buikslotermeerplein, voor de ingang van het stadsdeelkantoor. Toen op die plek een parkeergarage werd gebouwd, werd het kunstwerk naar de huidige locatie verplaatst, waarmee het de naam Tabula Rasa eer aandeed en aan een nieuw bestaan kon beginnen.
