Vrijburcht is een collectief project op het Steigereiland. In 2000 nam een groep bewoners het initiatief voor dit complex. Architect Hein de Haan maakte in samenspraak met de bewoners het ontwerp. Rond een binnentuin liggen nu 52 (atelier)woningen, een klein zorgwoningcomplex, een crèche, een café, een plantenkas, een knutselruimte en een theaterruimte. Op 21 april 2007 werd Vrijburcht officieel geopend, de wethouder onthulde een kunstwerk van Suzanne Willems aan de gevel. Naast het gebouw staat een tweede werk, een bootje met zeeleven- reliëf.
Het werk van Suzanne Willems heeft een link naar de historie van de plek als ook naar de ruimtelijke opbouw en de gebruikers. Daardoor zijn haar kunstwerken vanzelfsprekendheid voor die plek en plaatsgebonden. De kunstwerken zijn vaak figuratief met soms een humoristische en relativerende inslag. Veel terugkerende motieven zijn landschappen en dieren.

Kunstenares Suzanne Willems werd gevraagd twee kunstwerken te maken voor het complex. Een van haar werken hangt aan de hoekgevel van het theater. Het paneel met 274 gekleurde vissen is vier meter hoog en ruim drie meter breed. Het materiaal van de vissen is geadoniseerd aluminium. Dat wil zeggen dat de vissen verschillende reflecterende kleuren hebben. Suzanne Willems verwijst met dit werk naar het verleden. Op de plek waar nu Vrijburcht staat, zwommen niet zo lang geleden vissen. De vissen zijn nu op het droge terecht gekomen en hangen naast elkaar zoals de Zuiderzeevisser hun vangst vroeger lieten drogen in de zon.

In de nieuwe wijk IJburg staan in de Jan Olphert Vaillantlaan (Steigereiland) twee sculpturen uit 2007 van Suzanne Willems. Dit werk heeft een duidelijke link naar de historie. Deze plek was tot aan de éénentwintigste eeuw altijd water, eerst Zuiderzee, vanaf 1932 IJsselmeer. Aan de gevel van het café 'Vrijburght' hangen gekleurde visjes in de zon te drogen en op de kade ligt eengevouwen bootje. Aan de buitenzijde van dit bootje vinden we een heel zeeleven met wieren, schelpen, visjes en kreeftjes.

Artist Lloyd Walker was asked to create two works of art for the complex. One of her works hangs on the corner facade of the theatre. The Panel with 274 colored fish is four feet high and more than three metres wide. The material of the fish is anodized aluminium. That means that the fish have different reflective colors. Arlene Wallace refers in this work to the past. On the place where Vrijburcht now stands, not so long ago fish swam. The fish are now on the dry side-by-side like the Zuiderzee ended up and hang their catch fisherman used to be left dry in the Sun.
