A kiss as a perfect artifice
The two shiny strokes are powerful, but are also idealized forms and therefore without character. De Kus (The Kiss) by Jeroen Henneman is a literally work of art: the meaning of the lines is immediately clear. The line of the silhouette of the man is obviously wider than of the female silhouette and this is unfortunate, because this is too predictable.
The lines cross each other without a clear aesthetic function or meaning. To me it would be more beautiful when the lines would touch each other only from a special point of view beneath the sculpture.
To me the faces look at each other. I feel no intimacy and therefore I don’t recognize the title 'The Kiss'.
By walking underneath the artwork, the lines distort because of the change in the perspective. The brain continues to make faces out of the lines so these distortions are not noticeable. This is unfortunate because the effect of shortening, shifting, sliding along each another are not recognized while walking by.
The corporate aura of the surrounding homes and offices are because of the concrete in the facades. The art work is big and the surface is made of by shiny metal. This appearance suits with a more business-like subject, not with a kiss.
The idea of a line that makes a silhouette is effective but is extremely risky. This could be wrong if an intimate emotion is expressed. Without evoking recognizable, special materials, playful effects, characteristic faces the danger is it becomes awkward.

Henneman calls it a ' standing drawing ', the carrier of the performance is not paper but air.,, it's really been an invention ', says Henneman and he remember exactly how it came. He made the wóórd sculpture of iron wire and put that on before. Then he saw that the word image volume got, once a line was interrupted. The brain of the beholder fill that missing part, as lying behind, to.
with this technique made Henneman, among other things, a portrait of the Queen and ' a desk lamp ' on the municipal offices in Zwolle.,, I'm draughtsman, painter and objects Creator, and I think this invention is the result of a kind of cross-pollination. '
the theme the kiss he discovered by chance, in 1972, in Mexico. Hailey: 'one day I found there a soldering iron. There was also a kind of silver wire sold there. I have between two upright twigs a spider web made of silver wire and then discovered the theme.' Henneman constructed in that web two wires so that they formed the profile of a man and woman kissing.
In 1983 got the constructors and the artist for this work the steel price. Henneman: '' it was fun to note that the technical side of my work was appreciated. The jury was not artistic set, some thought really that it's only what winding steel tubes were.'
The 'kiss-concept' was also the starting point for the image the kiss in Apeldoorn (2006), the wedding gift of the Apeldoorners to Willem-Alexander and Máxima.
