See what comes with an iconic sculpture
In my essays it’s my intention to let artwork and its environment speak for itself, without taking into account what is written about it or what preceded the work. With an artwork like De Schreeuw (The Scream) by Jeroen Henneman this is impossible. The reason for the work of art is still influential in the Dutch society: the murder of Theo van Gogh and the cry for peace and respect.
But still I will make an effort to let the artwork speak for its own, and try to exclude the historical backgrounds. I shall concentrate on the shape, the materialization and the posture of the sculpture. The form consists of a number of silhouettes that forms a plaque. A silhouette is as simple as effective: it uses the outer rest shape. The outer shape of the silhouette of a screaming person; this is obvious and everyone will recognize this at a glance.
The screaming person has general characteristics (has a"perfect" but no particular nose, chin, neck etc.). The inner line is a line of a more characteristic person with a long nose that engages deeply between the eyes. This person seems still to look upwards. Some of the silhouettes between the inner and outer line have deformations, but to me it’s not clear what these are expressing. The logic of the 'transitions' between the 'perfect' crying and the 'characteristic' silent silhouette is not clear to me.
The materialization consists of a shiny material with sharp edges. Because of the sharpness of the edges, the silhouettes are clearly visible. The plaque that is formed by the silhouettes is not disturbed because of the use of thin lines between the silhouettes. The plaque feels cold and hard and seems to be made by a machine. This seems to contradict with the evocation of the silhouette of the screaming person, namely an intense sadness that is expressed spontaneously.
The artwork is standing in an environment with lawns and ancient trees. It’s placed in the grass at some distance from the hardening, so it evokes stillness to me and it looks like a grave monument. If it would stand on a pedestal and placed on a square it would be more a memorial monument.
De Schreeuw (The Scream) by Jeroen Henneman refers to a trauma in the Dutch society and for that reason alone, the artwork is known to many people. The design is simple, the materialization does not fit with the evoked feeling and the posture could fit more to function of the artwork.

Form
The Scream by Jeroen Henneman has a classic shape. Many works show such a line, also as a human profile. Special is that a large number of slightly different profile-lines run closely together. The lines are not all of them quite effective. In my opinion, the centre of the artwork is to high and the artwork seems to fall.
Material
The image is made by galvanic steel, has a smooth surface and has sharp edges. To express a raw emotion this surface could have been more tactile. Maybe the artist chose the smoothness to express a need for security and stability.
Location
The artwork is placed in memory and near the site of a murder, at a time that the society lived in fear of terrorism.
Impact
The work expresses a social drama and the need for safety.
The statue is of great social significance, is a cry for peace and an indictment of violence. People express this side by side, together as being one person.

Compared with other artworks
The artwork to compare withm, don't have a similar impact.
A large number of works are more successful in elaboration, such as The Kiss also by Jeroen Henneman (Amsterdam, see picture 1more information).

The statue Georg Elser, by Ulrich Klages (Berlin, see photo 2more information) and the fountain by Bas Lugthart (Groningen, see picture 3) have striking similarities, with the difference that they are less loaded.

the chosen design by Jeroen Henneman is clear and powerful. It is a profile of Theo van Gogh. On one side is the face depicts the curved backwards and a shout. The tension between the scream and the closed mouth depicts the complexity of the theme for the artist an important gave rise to the image: the freedom of expression.
