Het was druk op het Nasssauplein bij de onthulling, tienduizenden waren aanwezig. De communisten trokken vanaf de Westermarkt naar het plein, anarchisten en andere links georienteerde groeperingen als De Dageraad, de Vrije Socialisten, de antimilitaristen, de Algemeene Nederlandsche Geheelonthoudersbond en de Nederlandschen Vegetariërsbond - begonnen hun tocht op het IJsclubterrein, het huidige Museumplein. Er was een ogenblik stilte, een foto van de manifestatie toont een menigte waarin de bordjes 'stilte' opduiken.
In het eerste ontwerp had Polet niet Nieuwenhuis maar de figuur Prometheus, die het vuur van de goden stal en het de mensen bracht, uitgebeeld. Het ontwerp werd afgekeurd evenals een volgend ontwerp waarop Nieuwenhuis figureerde naast Prometheus. In het uitgevoerde ontwerp staat Nieuwenhuis tradioneel hoog op de sokkel maar Prometheus is nog steeds aanwezig, zij het als relief op de sokkel.
Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919): Pionier van het socialisme, hij geldt als één van de oprichters van de socialistische beweging in Nederland. Hij was in Nederland populair door zijn optredens bij stakingen van ambachtslieden, maar ook bij die van de veenarbeiders. In veel arbeiderswoningen was een foto van hem te vinden. Omdat hij opkwam voor de Friese veenarbeiders, kreeg hij de bijnaam Us Ferlosser.

De afbeelding op de sokkel kan als symbool voor Domela Nieuwenhuis' gevangenschap in 1886 worden opgevat. De fakkel - het vuur - in de opgeheven linkerhand kan geïnterpreteerd worden als het licht der waarheid dat hij aan de mensen bracht. In het reliëf is Prometheus afgebeeld. De Griekse held Prometheus stal het vuur uit de hemel en gaf het aan de mensen, waarna oppergod Zeus hem aan een rots liet vastbinden. Prometheus heeft een fakkel in de hand.
In twee eerdere ontwerpen had Johan Polet de Griekse mythe als driedimensionaal beeld centraal gesteld. Met een ondergeschikte plaats voor Domela. Pas in een derde ontwerp liet Polet zich leiden door de traditionele vorm van een standbeeld op een sokkel.
