The hardness of violence and a circle that feels as a embrance
This versatile monument has a form that feels like an embrace and a support, while the finishing helps make palpaple the hardness of war. The artwork is an expression of feelings and offers an opportunity to commemorate and mourn together, in the middle of our society and in our time.
After zooming in you see a smooth, shiny, cold surface with sharp edges, what gives a sense of hardness. This fits to a monument that refers to the indescribable suffering of the greatest disaster of mankind.
Up close you can read a tekst, see a flash of light and hear sounds. The sounds alternate between roars and a sound like a knocking heart. This makes me more interested in the texts and the images on the artwork.
The artwork consists of columns that are placed in a circle. I think of people who support each other. The middle column makes me think of the victims that are commemorated by the artwork and the women who have survived the war. The shape is a good halfway between hardness (a tight semicircle) and softness (the columns that appear to support each other). In the choice of the material and the finish I don’t feel this middle: this leads me especially to hardness. For this arwork my preference would be a combination of hard and soft materials.
From a slightly greater distance you can see that the artwork invites people to form a circle around it, for instance during a memorial service. The flowers that I see regulary support me and makes me realize the empathy of people.
The work of art is a standing on a privileged location with a square for relaxation, with art museums, with a music stage, with buildings of diplomacy and professionalism. As a result, the work of art in both literally and figuratively in the heart of the society.

Translation
The column sends two signals. The first signal is composed of a new of business and then again light, which turns into a dead rising and noise. This signal is for the women that are not returned from the camp. The second signal is a circular light Flash together with a knocking noise and refers to the women who have survived the war. If the light is at its height, continue to Flash once and whisk away: a moment of silence.

This monument on the Museumplein, which paid tribute to the initiative was taken in 1972, 90,000 women who perished in the women's concentration camp Ravensbrück. In addition, it is intended as a tribute to the women who perished by resistance in the second world war. On a natural stone stage, height-ascending, elf rectangular stainless steel panels. Surround these panels in half arch placed a cylinder from which light flashes come. This white, chilly light is reflected by the surrounding metal plates and is reminiscent of the searchlights of the camp. Who enters the stone platform and the cylinder is approaching, notes that besides the flashes of light, of a heartbeat pounding derived sounds also come true. As a monument is this work at least remarkable. The use of the cold stainless steel, the tight geometric shapes and the use of ominous light and sound was a break with the traditional monuments style. In that sense, this monument was ahead of its time.
