De opdracht een beeld te maken voor de luchthaven Schiphol associeerde Carel Visser (1928) direct met iets dat zweeft, zwemt of hangt. Het resulteerde in een enorme sculptuur van rood en zwart aluminium dat de titel ‘Vliegende Vis' meekreeg. Het hangt als een bedreigend gevaarte boven vertrekhal 3. Het werk is typerend voor het aankoopbeleid van de jaren negentig, toen men tot de conclusie kwam dat de kunstwerken een tegenwicht moesten vormen tegen alle commerciële activiteiten en de dynamiek en gehaastheid van het reizen. De beeldende kunst is dan niet decoratief meer of versmeltend met haar omgeving maar gaat de concurrentie aan met de reclamezuilen en informatieborden.
