I placed a large ball made of sugar in a nature reserve. The ball slowly started to transform, being eroded by the rain, and eaten by insects.

Is the creation of art reserved solely for people, or can nature also play a role? Semâ Bekirović (The Netherlands, 1977) sees animals and natural forces as equal, collaborative partners. Thus, with her project Reading by Osmosis, she presents objects made by non-human artists, such as the wind, crows, fire, rain, gravity, bees, dust, heat, mud and moss. From a towel holder, in which bees produce their honeycomb, to a bird's nest of colored coat hangers.
For Into Nature, Bekirović has designed a giant magic ball of sugar: candy made for nature. Melted and colored sugar was poured layer by layer into a mold in order to form a one-and-a-half-meter diameter ball. It is literally a layered work of art, evoking the layers of earth and soil in the landscape itself.
Bekirović places the ball outside, on thrgerveen, and then lets nature finish the job: an unpredictable process in which sun and rain determine how quickly the ball changes shape and color. Slowly this 'sugar planet' dissolves, leaving its color traces in the landscape. Sugar is the largest energy supplier for the human body. In this work, we see that it is nature that consumes the magic ball, while humankind slowly depletes the earth. Vertaling

Marcus Bruystens:
“Bekirovic’s work is best described as playful conceptualism. Like reality, it’s a universe of temporary constellations wherein objects, people, animals and/or chemical reactions trigger one another into acting out their parts in a play directed by coincidence. Bekirovic creates a field of tension between the parameters she defd her subject’s personal agenda. She eschews a hands-on, interfering approach, allowing her subject to co-author the work.”
