La Libertà della Poesia è una scultura marmorea di Pio Fedi, eseguita tra il 1870 e il 1883 e facente parte del monumento funebre a Giovan Battista Niccolini nella basilica di Santa Croce. Fu probabilmente la fonte di ispirazione più vicina alla celeberrima Statua della Libertà di Auguste Bartholdi.
La creazione di un monumento funebre a Niccolini in Santa Croce entrò in una fase esecutiva solo nel 1870, a quasi dieci anni dalla morte del poeta (1861), incaricando lo scultore Fedi, reduce dal grande successo del Ratto di Polissena, di ideare un'allegoria della Poesia, il cui bozzetto in gesso fu completato nel 1871. Per arrivare all'inaugurazione del monumento si dovette aspettare ancora diversi anni, fino al 1883.
L'opera fu sicuramente vista da Viollet Le Duc, architetto e scultore che più volte visitò Firenze in quel periodo. Egli, col suo allievo Auguste Bartholdi, costruì a partire dai primi bozzetti, proprio del 1870, lo scheletro per la scultura monumentale della Statua della Libertà, che la Francia donò agli Stati Uniti nel 1889 e che oggi è tra i simboli più noti di New York e del"mondo libero".

The freedom of poetry is a marble sculpture by Pio Fedi, carried out between 1870 and 1883 and part of the funerary monument to Giovan Battista Niccolini in basilica di Santa Croce. It was probably the inspiration closer to the famous statue of liberty by Auguste Bartholdi.
The creation of a monument to Niccolini in Santa Croce went into an Executive phase only in 1870, almost ten years after the death of the poet (1861), by the sculptor Faiths, reduce the huge success of the rape of Polyxena, of devising an allegory of poetry, whose plaster model was completed in 1871. To get to the inauguration of the monument had to wait several years until 1883.
The work was definitely seen by Viollet Le Duc, architect and sculptor who repeatedly visited Florence during that period. He, with his pupil Auguste Bartholdi, built in the early 1870 's own sketches, the skeleton for the monumental sculpture of the statue of liberty, that France gave to the United States in 1889 and today is one of the best-known symbols of New York and of the"free world".
