Van Lau graduated from the Fine Arts Department in National Taiwan Normal University in 1959. He held an exhibition at the Hong Kong City Hall in 1964. In 1965, he obtained a grant to visit the United States from the Institute of International Education, U.S.A. In 1968, his sculpture Exhibition was held in LUZ Gallery, Manila. He was awarded SFBM Medal in the 145th Annual exhibition of the National Academy of Design, N. Y., U.S.A. in 1970. An exhibition of his work was sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1979. In 1984, he organized the first Hong Kong Open-Air Sculptures Exhibition. A major exhibition, 'The Art of Van Lau' was presented by the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 1987. In 1992, 'The Exhibition of Sculpture by Van Lau' was presented by the Hsiung Shih Gallery in Taipei. 'Van Lau Sculptures Exhibition' was presented by the Sichuan Gallery in 1992. He is now the Chairman of the Hong Kong Artists Association and the President of the Hong Kong Sculptors Association.

In case you pass by Nathan Road in Hong Kong, you’ll notice these peculiar hands stand prominently near the Park Lane Shopping area. Made by Van Lau (or Wen Lou in PinYin) in 1989, this statue was entitled 'Please'. This intriguing piece of sculpture prompted me to do some background research on it. Van Lau graduated from an art school in Taiwan and is now a prominent sculptor in Hong Kong. Now I am not sure why this was made but based on its title and the year it was put up, I’m guessing that this was an artistic response to the 1989 Tiananmen Protests. Now we all know that mentioning this issue is quite delicate for some but then again this is just my assumption. Anyway, Hong Kong is a step closer to achieving democracy. So artistic freedom is very much felt in Hong Kong through artworks such as this. Source: www.fa.hku.hk.
