Monument with lightness.
Sem Titutolo by Ivens Machado is a monument on legs. Which gives the monument the appropriate lightness. This is good.
A monument shows the heaviness of the occasion. It reminds us of the sad, the lonely, the painfull feeling. A good memorial allows us to have this experience ourselves again. Due to the revive of the moment we know what it could mean for the present time.
And then we feel lightness. By learning from the past we become wiser, more engaged, peaceful, loving, caring. In other words: lighter. With lightness we carry the experience with us.
So lightness is needed. We also need the past. Sem Titulo may be followed more frequently for monuments.

Dus lichtheid is nodig.

Building the visible, an act that is not always rewarding, requires a game of concealment and appearance elaborated in instances that are almost always inaccessible. The body of the work itself does not contain art, but a gesture that often drives it away.

The image of oneself is unrealizable, it demands an observation distanced from the other in parallel, an announced frustration that shapes and excites us, wearing fantasies that look like identities. They are setbacks. Technical or scientific approaches reveal a mysterious, implausible body; the dress has unrecognizable meanings. A smell. Biology and geometry dress up fantasies, transfiguring desire, trying to overcome incompleteness by always leaving one end of the hanger out. The unowned bodynctions.
Sexuality is of the order of the mental and very little sensual, the drive that underlies this behavior and formalisms reaffirms an archaic truth. It is radically infiltrated where it is not manifest and does not depend on representation. It's.

Over the past month Brazilian artist Ivens Machado has fabricated new sculptural works using concrete and steel rods for the Artist Studio Projects. In keeping with artistic concerns that have developed since the early 1970's, Machado incorporates rich pigmentation and organic forms.
Ivens Machado: 'I do not aspire to the position of '˜reproducer'. A paternal relationship between art history and my work does not pre-occupy me, although I recognize its existence. Rather, it is in the realm of indistinct nocturnal pleasures that I live the process of artistic creation.'
Ivens Machado has exhibited internationally and within his native Brazil since 1966, creating installations, book works, video and sculpture. He resides for an extended period each year in Italy, exhibiting in Milan, Venice and Turin where he shows with Galeria Tucci Russo.
