Like most of the buildings on this side of the Thames, the Hayward is fairly recent, and its angular look was inspired by the Cubist movement.
Continue past the Hayward and turn right towards the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the river. You will see a yellow staircase, go past it and you will find William Pye's stunning sculpture Zemran (1971).
As a child, Pye developed a fascination with water and you can see it here in this sculpture's fluid shapes and lines. Much like Matisse in his very late period, Pye has tried to pare down his work into simplified forms held together by a balanced composition.
