Translation
The Monumento ai caduti di Mentana, created by sculptor Luigi Belli, Turin is located in the homonymous square Milan, accompanied by two plaques dedicated to the Giordano Bruno, another young Garibaldi Guido hair, placed on the school's perimeter wall. Immediately jumps to the eye on the female figure, draped proudly abundant and classic garments, winding it seems wants to defy the air and for bold, and equally bold beauty. The abundant hair ruffled and surrounded by a corona turrita, hands that hold up the Laurel on the one hand, the hilt of a sword on the other hand, no lining help unveil the identity of such overwhelming beauty: is Italy, soaring on a narrow pink granite pedestal of Baveno, in turn decorated with bronze reliefs. These depict the battle of Monterotondo, the defeat of Mentana and South side in line with the face of the statue, the Roman Wolf suckling the twins sitting on a stone with engraved letters S.P.Q.R. as if already so the message wasn't clear enough, on the northern front of the pedestal inscription that mentions:"DUCE GARIBALDI/CALMLY/DESPERATE of WIN/GLAD to FRUITFUL/FOUGHT DEATH FELL – on the TRAIL of blood/PUSHING forth RITROSI/Italy/ HE FOUND HIS BONA – HOW MANY VICTORIES IMMORTALS/THIS DARK DEFEAT". Even the monument, however, as the event that celebrates, had to fight hard, since when in 1873"democratic society" decided to create a sculpture to commemorate the fallen in the battle of Mentana, the city authorities were opposed, preferring to advocate the equestrian statue to Napoleon III.
