This artwork has a huge size, is made of white marble and makes you remember larger than life statues of ancient Italian rulers. In many cases the only fragment of these statues that is conserved is a (damaged) hand or a foot. If you look more closely to the artwok of Cattelan, you'll see that the other fingers and the thumb are broken. It's funny that the middle finger is the only finger that remained intact and that this is thereby making a shocking image.
What would Maurizio Cattelan mean? The raised middle finger is the first thing you see and gives a shocking effect at once. Cattelan does not indicate against which is agitated. It seems that Cattelan is only seeking to the shock-effect.
This leads me to repulsion. It goes against the great importance that I award to art; art is one of the essentialia according to Aristotle, who speaks about the good, the beautiful and the true.
Could Cattelan give a different value to art? Jah, I think Cattlen laughs about the intention of art. The fingers are happen to be broken down. The valuable white marble does not immortalize a socially important phenomenon. Cattelan uses details from the rulers from ancient Italy, but does not reflect on them.
This artwork is one large middle finger to art, to history, to the powerful. This is clear. But this doesnt make sense to me: whát exactly is it where Cattelan is against? What will Cattelan place against it? If I ask myself the question to whom I would raise my middle finger, I would do it against the most worst person. This leads me to Adolf Hitler. If someone has a middle finger raised against a statue of Adolf Hitler, I would understand that.
Cattelan portrays a middle finger. This is a powerful symbol for strong repulsion. But because the counter is not clear, this turns against Maurizio Cattelan himself. Because a powerful symbol, a precious material, a reference to a large history is used without substantive message, Maurizio Cattelan brings damage to his name and art.

Cattelan beeldt een middelvinger uit. Dit is een krachtig symbool voor sterke weerzin. Maar doordat onduidelijk is waartegen, keert dit zich tegen Maurizio Cattelan. Doordat een krachtig symbool, kostbaar materiaal, een verwijzing naar een grootste geschiedenis wordt gebruikt zonder inhoudelijke boodschap brengt Maurizio Cattelan schade toe aan zijn naam en kunst.

The sculpture is 4 meters high and 60, who are total 11 counting the basement, and is made of Carrara marble.
The work depicts a hand who is in the fascist salute but with all severed fingers-as if eroded by time-except the middle finger. The disrespectful gesture, which contrasts amusingly with classical and monumental style of the work seems so please contact both the architecture of two decades of Palazzo Mezzanotte and the world of finance that it represents. Was inaugurated on September 24, 2010 by Mayor Letizia Moratti.
