l'Hercule Farnese (ou Hercule au repos) est un type statuaire dont l'original est une sculpture grecque antique attribuee a Lysippe (IVe siecle av. J.-C.).
Hercule y est represente reposant sur sa massue recouverte en partie de la peau du lion, et il tient a la main dans son dos les pommes du jardin des Hesperides, qu'il vient juste de cueillir.
Une copie du IIIe siecle apr. J.-C., signee par Glycon d’Athenes, a ete decouverte en 1546 dans les ruines des thermes de Caracalla. Entree dans la collection Farnese, elle est aujourd'hui conservee au musee archeologique national de Naples.
Copies
De nombreuses copies en marbre et des fontes en bronze ont ete executees, quelques-unes a l'epoque antique, puis de nombreuses a partir du XVIIIe siecle, parmi celles-ci :
copie antique en bronze (en reduction 42,5 cm) decouverte a Foligno (province de Perouse) et exposee au musee du Louvre.
copie en marbre realisee par Giovanni Comino a Rome de 1670 a 1672 et installee au parc de Sceaux en 1686 puis au jardin des Tuileries de 1793 a 2010, elle est ensuite revenue a Sceaux, un moulage reste aux Tuileries.
copie en marbre, executee de 1684 a 1686 par Jean Cornu pour les jardins du château de Versailles. Le type de l'Hercule Farnese est egalement repris dans le cadre de la statuaire funeraire romaine, comme on peut le voir sur le petit garçon souriant du Louvre. Sur cette statue, l'enfant est en train de jouer, ce qui s'oppose au caractere plutot triste du modele original. Le choix de ce modele est a lier a l'idee que l'enfant triomphera de la mort, mais aussi au goût des Romains pour les modeles hellenistiques.
Puzzle 3D
En 2012, dans le but de promouvoir le merchandising culturel de plusieurs musees italiens avec des projets en papier recycle, il est cree le puzzle de l'Hercule Farnese. Conçu par le designer Giacomo Sanna, ce puzzle est compose de 300 pieces de carton d'epaisseur de 3mm chacune, a assembler selon une numerotation progressive. Des exemplaires devraient etre disponibles prochainement a la librairie du musee.

Designed by designer Giacomo Sanna, this puzzle contains 300 3mm thick cardboard pieces each, according to assemble a progressive numbering. Copies should be available soon in the museum bookshop.
