Il Cimitero Ebraico del Lido è uno dei più antichi al mondo e costituisce una delle prime testimonianze della comunità ebraica veneziana. Fu istituito per concessione della Repubblica di Venezia nel 1389, in seguito a una disputa con i frati del vicino monastero di San Nicolò, che reclamavano la proprietà del terreno. Fu utilizzato e ampliato fino al 1641, ma poi cadde in disuso, fino alla sua riqualificazione nel 1999. Insieme alle lapidi di epoca medievale, ne sono state rinvenute e catalogate più di mille databili tra il 1550 e il primo '700. La suggestione di questo luogo ha ispirato profondamente numerosi poeti e letterati del Romanticismo, tra i quali Lord Byron e Goethe.
The Jewish cemetery of the Lido is one of the oldest in the world and is one of the first witnesses of the Jewish community of Venice. It was established by the Republic of Venice in 1389, following a dispute with the monks of the nearby monastery of San Nicolò, which claimed ownership of the land. Was used and expanded until 1641, but then fell into disuse, until its renovation in 1999. Together with medieval gravestones were discovered and catalogued more than 1,000 dated between 1550 and the early ' 700. The awesomeness of this place has inspired many poets and deeply romantic literati, among whom Lord Byron and Goethe.
