Markus Lüpertz (born 25 April 1941) is a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and writer. He also publishes a magazine, and plays jazz piano. He is one of the best-known German contemporary artists. His subjects are characterized by suggestive power and archaic monumentality. Lüpertz insists on capturing the object of representation with an archetypal statement of his existence. His art work is associated to neo-expressionism. Known for his eccentricity, German press has stylized him as a "painter prince".

Anfang Mai schwebten die vier bis zu fünf Meter hohen, insgesamt über zwei Tonnen wiegenden Figuren »Das Urteil des Paris« per Kran nach oben neben die Tischchen der Restaurantterrasse. Sie sind aus Aluminium gegossen wie die vertikalen Rippen der Fassade und vom selben grauen Farbton. Anlässlich der Aufstellung war manch Merkwürdiges zu erfahren. Das Architektenbüro, dem für die Gebäudehöhe Sonderkonditionen eingeräumt wurden, konnte auf das Format der Plastik Einfluss nehmen und wohl insgeheim froh sein, dass zumindest die Paris-Figur aus einiger Entfernung kaum auffällt und der Bau keineswegs einen barocken Charakter bekommt, der laut Grothe zum Kudamm passen würde - womit freilich für diesen Teil Berlins allenfalls wilhelminischer Neubarock gemeint sein könnte. Bauherr und Bildhauer betonten einhellig, dass die Skulptur, die Grothes Eigentum bleibt, völlig selbstständig sei, was ganz im Gegensatz zu barocken Synthesevorstellungen steht. Sie könnte genauso irgendwo im Grünen stehen und sei nichts weniger als verachtenswürdige »Kunst am Bau«. Warum das Thema des antiken Schönheitswettbewerbs für das Berliner Nobelhotel der Kette Swissôtel gewählt wurde, schien als unsinnige Frage zu gelten. Lüpertz, der sich vorwiegend figurativ mit mythologischen oder kunsthistorischen Stoffen befasst, aber sich als abstrakten Künstler bezeichnet, hält jedes Thema für beliebig.
