First and second impression of an artwork
After the second more closely encounter the artwork is different from the first one. The question is whether you should read this essay ... I cannot advise you to do so ;-)
At the first glance you think this work is playful, happy and free. The artwork seems to indicate a solid, grounded and likeable person. I felt no appeal to come closer, to investigate, to learn more. I spite of that, let’s look more closely.
Who is this? I think it’s a man because of the stong cheek. What does he do? What do you think: is he cheerful, extrovert? The man is wearing a crazy hat. He whisks with one arm. Is wearing a kind of epaulet on his right shoulder, is wearing a scarf on the left side. I think the man is a an artist because of the decorations in the clothing, a hat, a scarf, a shoulder piece. The man has thin legs but no feet. A ballet dancer maybe, but why does the person look so seriously? Let’s look a little better.
His face is eye-catching; the right eye is closed, the left eye squints, the mouth is wide. What does the red"c-shape" suggest? Now I recognize a special feature: Dubuffet is playing with a remnant form. An important element (the nose) is the remnant form of a relatively unimportant element (the cheek).
Le Bel Costume is expressing it’s name: patterns in the fabric disclose elements in striking primary colours. Dubuffet exhibits a large number of materials and jewelry: ornate fabrics, magnified gems and necklaces are suggested. Why is the 'dancer ' wearing both a men's and a women's shoe? Is this a 'businessman' with a tie and a elegant long scarf and even a second tie on the right shoulder?
After looking a little better I spin my conclusion. Le Bel Costume by Jean Dubuffet is a cheerful person with a business and an artistic side, can look surly and have a friendly wave, can wear a tie but also an elegant scarf. All of this is united in one person while everything is apparent. I look forward to a more detailed and personal acquaintance.

Bij de eerste kennismaking is het kunstwerk anders, dan na bestudering ervan. Het is de vraag of je dit essay moet lezen … Ik zou het afraden ;-)
Dit werk is speels, vrolijk en vrij, denk je na het eerste ogenblik. Het kunstwerk lijkt een stevige, geaarde en sympathieke persoon uit te beelden. Ik voelde geen appèl om dichterbij te komen, te onderzoeken, nader kennis te maken. Laten wij ondanks dat, toch van dichterbij kijken.
Wie is dit? Ik denk dat het een man is, vanwege de stevige kaaklijn. Wat doet hij? Wat denk je: is hij vrolijk, extravert? De man draagt een gekke hoed. Hij zwaait met een arm. Draagt iets van een epolet op de rechter schouder, draagt een sjaal aan de linkerkant. Ik denk dat de man een kunstenaar is vanwege de versieringen in de kleding: de hoed, de sjaal, de epolet. De man heeft dunne benen maar geen voeten. Een balletdanser misschien maar waarom kijkt de persoon zo serieus? Laten we nog iets beter kijken.
Zijn gezicht springt in het oog; de rechteroog is dicht, de linkeroog loenst, de mond is breed. Wat zou de rode ‘c-vorm’ zijn? Nu valt mij een bijzonder kenmerk op: Dubuffet speelt met een restvorm. Een belangrijk element (de neus) is de restvorm van een relatief onbelangrijk element (de wang).
Bel Costume doet zijn naam eer aan: patronen in de stof zijn uitvergroot en vormen elementen in opvallende primaire kleuren. Dubuffet verbeeldt een groot aantal materialen en sieraden: er lijken sierlijke stoffen, uitvergrote edelstenen en kettingen gedragen te worden. Draagt de ‘danser’ zowel een heren- als een damesschoen? Of is het een ‘zakenman’ met stropdas en elegante lange sjaal en zelfs een tweede stropdas op de rechterschouder?
Na iets beter kijken kom ik tot een meer genuanceerde indruk van de persoon. Le Bel Costume van Jean Dubuffet is een vrolijk persoon met een zakelijke en artistieke kant; kan nors kijken en vriendelijk zwaaien, kan een stropdas maar ook een elegante sjaal dragen. Dit alles is verenigt in één persoon terwijl alles herkenbaar blijft. Ik verheug mij op een nadere en persoonlijke kennismaking.
