Henri Laurens (1885-1954), was originally a stonemason. He began sculpting in 1899...and after meeting Pablo Picasso and other cubist artists, he adopted that style himself in 1911.
His gravesite at Montparnesse Cemetery features one of his own works- La Douleur (Grief). The piece depicts a naked woman sitting with her head in her lap.

Laurens was autodidact. Hij leerde door Braque het kubisme kennen en ontwikkelde zich tot een van de zuiverste vertolkers van deze richting. Weloverwogen en strak bouwde hij zijn ruimtecomposities op uit primaire plastische elementen als vlak, kubus en kegel. Hij zocht schoonheid in een evenwicht van de verschillende compositiedelen in hun ruimtewerking, beweging en tegenbeweging.
Laurens' constructies in materialen als ijzer en beschilderd hout ontstonden vnl. voor 1919. Na 1930 werd hij minder strak geometrisch, ofschoon hij nooit volledig afstand deed van het kubistische principe. Van zijn hand verschenen een aantal etsen. Hij maakte illustraties voor o.a. R. Radiguets Les Pelicans (1921) en kubistische tekeningen voor Les Idylles de Theocrite (1945).

Laurens was self-taught. He learned to know by Braque Cubism and developed into one of the clearest exponents of this direction. Deliberate and tightly built his space compositions of primary sculptural elements as flat, cube and cone. He sought beauty in a balance of the various compositional elements in their space operation, movement and countermovement.
Laurens' constructions in materials like iron and painted wood originated esp. For 1919. After 1930, he became less tight geometric, though he never did completely away from the Cubist principle. He has published a number of etchings. He made illustrations for eg R. Radiguets Les Pelicans (1921) and Cubist drawings for Les Idylls the Theocrite (1945).
