Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol was born in the December of 1861 in southern France and initially studied painting, then he took up tapestry design, yet later went into carving and then in his more mature career he started producing monumental sculptures, with this statue being one of his first major pieces of art in this form.
The famous French sculptor Aristide Maillol was born in Roussillon in the December of 1861, moved to Paris to study art in 1881, but unfortunately he died in a car accident in Banyuls within the Pyrenees in September 1944.
