Installee dans le parc de Bercy au fond du jardin Yitzhak Rabin au centre d’un bassin recouvert de nenuphars, Demeure 10, sculpture monumentale en bronze creee par Etienne-Martin (1913-1995) en 1968, appartient a la serie des Demeures debutee en 1954. Cette serie evoque la maison natale de l'artiste a Loriol dans la Drome, maison qu’il a ete oblige de vendre en 1945 au deces de ses parents.
Ce choc affectif a profondement modifie l'orientation de son oeuvre passant d’une statuaire figurative axee a une sculpture plus centree sur l'environnement tout en poursuivant son etude du corps et du visage humain . Il avait choisi la sculpture"parce que je n'etais pas foutu de faire autre chose (...)
Et plus serieusement parce que la sculpture est quelque chose que l'on peut attraper a bras-le-corps, embrasser, autour de laquelle on peut tourner, a l'interieur de laquelle on peut evoluer, a l'interieur de laquelle on peut eventuellement penetrer", expliquait-il dans un entretien a Liberation en 1992.
Experimentant la matiere, bois, pierre, plâtre, utilisant des materiaux etrangers, jusque la, a la sculpture comme le tissu, Etienne-Martin a developpe une pratique singuliere tres personnelle marquee par le goût de l'enigme.

Archeologique, geologique et organique, melant onirisme et biographie la Demeure X a ete installee dans les Jardins de la Memoire du Parc de Bercy. Malheureusement elle y occupe une sorte d'îlot inaccessible. Pourquoi ce choix ? L'artiste lui-meme ne disait-il pas qu'il voulait proposer l'experience d'un espace et solliciter les perceptions tactiles du spectateur ?
A partir de ce constat j'ai souhaite m'interesser a cette interiorite, a cet art de l'epaisseur et de la profondeur, de ce goût du voyage a l'interieur des choses si presentes dans les autres Demeures d'Etienne MARTIN.

Archaeological, Geological and organic, mixing fantasy and the biography Mansion X was installed in the gardens of the Parc de Bercy Memory. Unfortunately it occupies a kind of unreachable island. Why that choice ?
The artist himself did not he say he wanted to offer the experience of a space and seek the tactile perceptions of the viewer?
From this observation I wished interested in this interiority, to the art of the thickness and depth, this taste for travel inside things so present in other Residences of Etienne MARTIN.
