Waarom zijn straten zo voorspelbaar? Waarom hebben zij toch altijd die rechthoekige, grijzige, regelmatige betonnen tegels? Hooguit zie je soms dat zij ‘creatief’ half om half verspringend gestraat zijn.
Dit moet Rudolf Teunissen gedacht hebben, toen hij Broken Light ontwierp. Waar denk je aan als je iets rechthoekigs, grijzigs en regelmatigs ziet? Worden wij daar vrolijk van?

Voor het eerst in Nederland is een kunstwerk gemaakt dat de openbare verlichting van een hele straat overneemt. Broken Light is een installatie, die overdag onzichtbaar is, maar ’s avonds een hele straat vult van de trottoirs tot de gevels. Het is te vinden in de Atjehstraat op Katendrecht.
Deze straat was in de vorige eeuw lang één van de hoofdstraten van het schiereiland, maar is die rol kwijtgeraakt. De afgelopen jaren heeft de gemeente veel geïnvesteerd in nieuwbouw aan de Maaskade en renovatie van het Deliplein, waartussen deze straat een beetje in het niet viel. Dit was één van de redenen om het prestigieuze Broken Light in de Atjehstraat te installeren.
Lichtontwerper Rudolf Teunissen maakte een tweedelig kunstwerk. Op de gevels worden verticale lichtbanen geprojecteerd en op de trottoirs een organisch patroon. Het lichtontwerp geeft de straat een sprookjesachtig karakter.
Voor dit unieke project zijn achttien speciale armaturen geproduceerd door Max Designers. Deze armaturen vervangen de reguliere straatverlichting. Licht in de openbare ruimte is een technisch complexe aangelegenheid en vereist veel voorbereidingstijd.
Vele partijen en financiers waren betrokken bij dit project, waaronder Deelgemeente Feijenoord, Gemeentewerken Ingenieursbureau, Woonstad Rotterdam, dienst Stedebouw en Volkshuisvesting, Fonds BKVB, bewoners Katendrecht, Marinus van der Voorden, Lens BV en Beheer Gemeentewerken Openbare Verlichting. Broken Light is voortgekomen uit DeliLight: een meerjarig lichtonderzoek op Katendrecht georganiseerd door kunstenaarscollectief De Player met steun van het CBK Rotterdam en Pact op Zuid.
Broken Light werd op een ijskoude novemberdag in 2010 onthuld in een bomvolle straat met veel koek en zopie. Coördinator Peter Fengler bedankte tientallen partijen die hadden meegewerkt, vervolgens werd een sneeuwmachine aangezet en kwam als surprise-onthullingsact Sinterklaas langs om de kunstenaar te feliciteren.
In de loop van 2011 volgden nog enkele verrassingen: Broken Light werd aangehaald door verschillende internationale media en kreeg nominaties voor internationale prijzen. In juni won het de Lumiville award 2011 in de categorie ‘le Prix de l’espace public‘ (Lyon) en de LAMP Award (Barcelona).
Gezien de jonge maar opvallende traditie van lichtkunst in Rotterdam had Luci in 2007 al een internationaal symposium georganiseerd in de havenstad, en ook deze organisatie nomineerde Broken Light in 2011 als ‘best practice’ in de categorie ‘Social Lighting’.

"What we show is that you can redefine identity of space by light and illuminate the area, adding great contrast without visual obstruction or unnecessary light reflection". The new light technology contribute to accentuating architecture alongside functional lighting. Our development is related to our vision to improve the public space by lighting. Creating identity, encourage social needs or functions by lightdesign.
By combining vision and light systems we now create light systems as tools for light designers and city developers. So we can improve their light design for public space, enhancing social quality, creating spots for meetings, overview on the street, atmosphere by contrasts and motifs, representing the city by night with a new identity. Combining functional lighting and local illumination.
"This is the light we want in future" is what most designers and politicians say.
' A new approach for a mundane solution, often detained by uniformity.' When we started this light concept, our wishes were to view it as one whole space. Unlimited sight meant a glare free side with no form of night polluting systems. Uniform road lighting became part of the total scheme and we developed our own contrast scheme as main lighting.
Tall columns rise up along facades. Static and tight, the beams are balanced by pools of light reflecting on the ground. What looks like graffiti from above, pedestrians experience as light and dark. Completed in late 2010, the public lighting project has transformed the look and feel of Atjehstraat, creating an interior, cathedral-like space that covers a 4000 m2 projection area. The light sculpture has rejuvenated a street. The city renovation project transformed the street and the lighting provided the finishing touch. It is a social sculpture, for the street's residents, who literally and figuratively speaking welcomed a little light into their neighborhood.
We see that dark does not has to have a negative impression if minimal sight and overview is guaranteed. Even lighting the whole facades became friendly by the poles projections between the windows.
Our lightsystems can be further applied independently from or in combination with functional street lighting. We created different modules for lighting local suburbs, squares, parcs, and or highlighting interesting monuments or streets. Streets can be redefined in atmosphere and become spots of interest. Rather than following cultures of fear we let people be part of the street again, creating transparent and acceptable night live.
