Sanna is the name of the monumental sculpted head that stands on Place de la Comédie in Bordeaux since 2013. Jaume Plensa* is the creator of this female face made entirely of cast iron.
Seven meters high, the singular silhouette is the only remaining sculpture of a total of eleven works by the Catalan artist that was exhibited throughout the city back in 2013. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous art patron we have the opportunity to enjoy the artwork for another year or so.
The brutality of the material combined with the fine lines contrast with the imposing classical architecture of the Grand Théâtre in the background, and it all blends perfectly into the urban landscape. For those who know how to admire her, Sanna calls for serenity, a moment of pause, at the crossroads of the shopping street frenzy of Rue Sainte Catherine and Cours de l'Intendance. Inspired by poetry, the artist, for whom the face is the mirror of the soul, offers with this work of art a place of meditation and rest in the heart of Bordeaux.

Une sculpture monumentale de l'Espagnol Jaume Plensa, exposée depuis 16 mois au centre de Bordeaux, mais qu'une souscription populaire n'avait pas suffi à acheter, pourra finalement rester. La sculpture, titrée "Sanna", a été acquise par un mystérieux mécène qui l'a laissée à disposition de la rue.
"Sanna", un apaisé visage féminin de 7 mètres de haut en fonte de fer, qui s'intègre en douceur sur un espace piéton place de la Comédie à Bordeaux, avait fait l'objet d'une souscription lancée par la municipalité, après l'engouement auprès du public rencontré par l'exposition d'oeuvres de Plensa à travers la ville, en 2013.

Sanna avait d'abord été exposée pendant quatre mois avec dix autres sculptures de l'artiste catalan. Puis elle était restée seule quelques mois de plus, jusqu'à l'idée d'une souscription populaire. Mais à la clôture de celle-ci, en juin dernier, à peine plus de 54.000 euros venant de 501 donateurs avaient été recueillis, bien loin du prix estimé de l'oeuvre, 4 à 500.000 euros, même si la municipalité s'était dite prête à contribuer à hauteur de 300.000.
La Ville s'apprêtait donc à déboulonner Sanna en septembre pour la rendre à l'artiste, mais dernièrement, un mécène qui souhaite garder l'anonymat - apparemment un Bordelais d'origine vivant ailleurs - s'est manifesté pour acquérir la sculpture, et a décidé de la laisser à disposition de l'espace public, pour cinq ans a priori.
L'intercession surprise, révélée par Alain Juppé cette semaine, devrait être finalisée tout prochainement avec signature entre l'agent de l'artiste et l'acquéreur, a-t-on précisé samedi auprès de la mairie. Et Sanna restera au milieu des passants. Le remboursement des donateurs, déja entamé, se poursuivra bien entendu, précise la mairie.
